The Order of the Franciscans was the first to settle down in Buenos Aires in 1583. The first church was built in the early seventeenth century, but the current building was built towards 1731, on a project by the Jesuit Andres Bianchi (who also built the Town Council and the Church of Pilar). It was finished in 1754. In 1807 the facade collapsed and was rebuilt a few years later by Thomas Toribio. The Basilica acquired its current image in 1911 when the sculptures of Francis of Assisi, Christopher Columbus, Giotto and Dante Alighieri were added. It was one of the most hit churches during the fires of June 1955, having its main altar completely destroyed. La Orden de los Franciscanos fue la primera en establecerse en Buenos Aires en 1583. La primera iglesia se edificó a principios del siglo XVII, pero la actual comenzó a construirse hacia 1731, sobre un proyecto del Arq. Jesuita Andrés Bianchi (quien hizo el Cabildo y la Iglesia del Pilar). Se inauguró en 1754. En 1807 se derrumbó la fachada y fue reconstruida unos años más tarde por Tomás Toribio. La Basílica adquirió su imagen actual hacia 1911, por obra del Arq. alemán Ernesto Sackman, quien, inspirado en el barroco bávaro, alteró su severidad neoclásica. Fue una de las iglesias más afectadas en los incendios de junio de 1955, cuando se destruyó totalmente el altar mayor.
